Bxbs's policy regarding mental health coverage consists of quietly waiting for the insured to die, negating their need to pay their medical bills. They require preauthorization for mental health coverage, which means you first have to find a doctor who will see you. Asking a person with depression to jump through bureaucratic hoops in order to have themselves treated is a little like telling a person with a broken leg that if they were really committed to receiving care, that they would hop to the hospital on it. Unfortunately, all doctors within 50 miles of where I live are either not currently taking new patients, or were educated at such fine institutions as the medical school of the Dutch Antilles and have reviews indicating that their doctors learned to treat mental disorders by feigning such severe emotional problems themselves, that the patients actually can't help but feel better about their own sanity because of the abuse and eccentricities suffered under their care. Despite this, there are "not currently exceptions for out of network providers".

Perhaps oddest of all is the fact that a single trip to the emergency room pursuant to a psychiatric breakdown (which must happen frequently since by my clock, even finding a psychiatrist has taken over 4 months...AND most antidepressants can take weeks to work, AND if you're treated by a pettifogger like the docs bxbs rubs scruples with, can produce psychotic episodes) would cost Bxbs more than treating a patient with an out of network physician for over a year.

Goodbye deductible, hello unnecessary chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and lupus screening!
