Review: They seem to have turned things around
I was hesitant to use Atlantis based on some of the comments, but i have recently heard of things turning around their. I have not had any issues. It does seem that they have made changes to correct past issues. I am happy so far.

Review: New to Atlantis and sorry
I am new on the Atlantis Health Plan and am dreadfully sorry I changed. I changed because of the 20% lower cost over my prior insurance. Big mistake! Please be aware that they had a "recapitalization" in December. It seems to me looking at the reviews posted that things have gotten worse. I finally had a customer service rep, who is quite rude tell me that the website is not current. Now after waiting on hold for 30 minutes, I have been told they have to reaearch for sleep study doctor and will get back to me in 7-10 days. WHAT????

Review: I'm a physician and say DON'T GET THIS INSURANCE!
As a hospital physician I was signed up for many insurance companies by my department to ensure a large patient pool. Well I quickly learned about Atlantis. Many respectable physicians have dropped this insurance because of it's poor coverage and it hardly pays for a visit, therefore it is difficult to refer a patient who needs a specialist. BUT THE WORST ASPECT is the shannanigans we have to go through just to try and get a desperately needed test approved. Writing threatening letters suggesting they are malpracticing by not approving an MRI of the brain when the patient has signs and symptoms of a brain mass doesn't seem to work. Talking to them on the phone is even worse. Giving them my cell phone number to have an Atlantis physician call me back was pointless. THEIR MODUS OPERANDI is they are waiting for us all to GIVE UP TRYING! They make no effort to call a requesting doctor back about a needed study. The doctors I've spoken to generally seem foreign, and lack any empathy for a sick patient. I tell ALL my patients who have this insurance that they should try and switch to a better one as soon as possible. I think ALL physicians who are a provider for this company should en masse DROP this insurance -- they would surely go bankrupt then!!

Review: Good luck trying to file a claim.
The people at Atlantis don't seem to understand their own benefits packages. Every time I call with a question, I get a different answer.

They have a very clear form that lists the copays for specific care. But the billing department disregards this list. For example, copays for Gyno care were listed at $25 for 2010. But I am getting billed for a $40 specialist visit instead.

Once a month for five months, I have called Atlantis to clear up the matter. Every single time I am given a completely different answer ranging from, "we have already taken care of that bill, don't worry about it" to "you need to pay the $40 copay". They have no record of my previous phone calls with them. Every single time I call, it is a new story. What story are they going to tell me next? Meanwhile, my bill is being sent to a collections agency.

I've tried out several different health plans over the past seven years and I have never encountered this level of incompetence in a billing and claims department. Steer clear from this company if you can.

Review: Run, Don't Walk
IF YOU'RE NOT SICK NOW, YOU WILL BE AFTER DEALING WITH ATLANTIS.

Customer service is demeaning, uncooperative, belittling and ignorant. They even put in their literature, "shop around." Reminds me of the phone company's attitude many years ago.

The only thing they have going for them is the cost. Cheaper than others. But, even insurance brokers hesitate to recommend them, and only then only because if you can't afford anything better. One agent told me: "You get what you pay for."

Not worth the knot in your stomach you get after trying to deal with them.

Now you can see why they almost went bankrupt. On hindsight, too bad they didn't.

Good riddance, Atlantis.

Review: Cheap is Expensive
You may not think it's a big deal if you're young and healthy to go with a cheap insurance company. A better idea would be to burn all your money since that would at least keep you warm. I could not even imagine in the beginning the ways in which this company would steal money and potentially listen to me die while begging for a CT scan to see if I have a brain tumor. Three doctors have recommended it including an ent, I've paid into the plan for a year without needing one thing and they want me to go through an appeals process or more likely, they'd like for me just to drop dead quickly without doing anything crazy like a 'treatment'. It's really and truly a fraud. The only good thing is that when they believe you are sick, they will let you cancel your plan asap (of course) and I even yelled loud enough to get back my premium for the current month. For the self employed, go with the Freelancer's Union for $50 more a month and you get waaaaaay more insurance and it's Blue Cross. Trust me, you will lose money every time you do anything with Atlantis. If you really can't afford anything else, put that premium money in a savings account and pay out of pocket. I'm absolutely sincere when I say it is better to be uninsured than to 'covered' by Atlantis. (BTW, these wonderful reviews are plants from the company. I'm sure everyone can tell, but it just enrages me even more.)

Review: The worst of the worst
My self employment group dropped the BC/BS coverage they had offered right when my husband got cancer so we got Atlantis. What a nightmare. Every MRI, every medicine, every test had to be pre-approved. I spent most of the year he was sick sceamming on the phone with incompetent Atlantis reps. He wasdying and I never got any home health assistance until the day before he died when he was in a coma. The excuse was they had no in network home health aides available. Pathetic!

Their specialty mail order pharmacy serice is uncoordinated and inept. Once you get approval they can still deny you based on the cost. Atlantis dropped me when I moved to NJ with NO NOTICE because they have no network in NJ but their own rules say if you have a business in NYC you can stay on. I was reinstated after lots of phone calls and paperwork.

I am convinced Atlantis does not want to cover me because I have some serious health conditions. I have reported them at least a dozen times to the NY State Insurance Board. Problem is there is no other affordable alternatvie for a self-employed person. If you can afford any other covereage, don't get Atlantis.

Review: Some good, some not so good
The low coverage rating I provided is because I've had truly wonderful coverage in another state, that is hard to compare. I can't say I'd altogether recommend Atlantis, but it might be just as good as numerous others available to those of us on the Healthy NY option. I have belonged to Atlantis Health Plan for about 3 1/2 yrs. The PCP I most wanted as my doctor accepts AHP - so that is a positive. However, I have found that many doctors won't accept it, and staff for several have mentioned they don't like dealing with Atlantis. A surgeon who performed a minor out patient surgery for me, who is on a medical school teaching staff, and whom I respect, said he was invited to be part of the AHP founding group. He said that although he turned down the invitation and noted that AHP can be difficult to get approvals from, he believes they are no better nor no worse, overall, than others, except for one he cautioned me to avoid.
A neurologist and a cardiologist I saw, who requested coverage for test they believed I needed, were also turned down for some of the test. An orthopedic specialist commented that he thinks the Atlantis core group should be put in prison - that they don't have the best interest of patients at heart. It concerns me that they don't cover physical therapy unless as part of after hospital stay rehab. I just noticed, though, that in the flyer I rec'd in the mail, that their clinics offer physical therapy - not sure though, what this includes, but plan to check i out. IN fact, I plan to to go to one of these clinics for the first time tomorrow, as my doctor is on leave and it is difficult to find any doctors who will accepts Atlantis who are also recommended to me by friends or others on a community list serve I'm part of. The customer service people I have spoken with, however, have been great - articulate, helpful, patient, with one exception. This man was a tad bit rude when I pressed him on details about coverage for some particular thing I couldn't pay out of pocket for and for which he said I was covered. I didn't quite trust that this service was covered, as their literature seemed to indicate otherwise and he got a little irritated at my skepticism. It was covered, after all. I vaguely recall, also, receiving something in the mail that encouraged me to get an updated mammogram - a positive.

Review: I' m surprised
I had quite the opposite experience from most of the reviewers. Maybe I was lucky to have a sales rep explain the plan in detail so I knew how things were done like preauthorizations, etc. I was also told to look under internal medicine when looking for a primary care physician. I had a bout fifteen or more pages and contacted three within a short walk from my place. The first one I went to was great. No problem getting medication, love the doctors and am one happy customer.

Review: Colon cancer
My father started chemotherapy and each pill cost $1500. The chemo reduced the tumor so much, the doctors were shock that they could possibly cut out the tumor. But Atlantis Health Insurance is the WORST!! They wont cover the chemo and other medications. The cancer has now spread to his liver. Now we have to wait to get medicaid and it could be too late by then. Thanks Atlantis and other insurance carriers for murdering and putting us citizens in the poor house. Thanks Richard Nixon!

Review: so far so good
Been with AHP a year.

Dropped Oxford whose renewal rate was 1400/ mo compared with 400/ mo for AHP.

Coverage is essentially the same.

The key is to pick your spots with providers ... either by using your agent who actually services the account or by going through customer service.

Major improvements have been made to the mail order plan and the company that services the prescription drug plan.

An added benfit is the Atlantis Health Centers which are 100 percent free.

I have referred several people to Ahp who have joined the plan.

Review: Find a different health plan
Atlantis customer service flatly lied to me. I was told when I signed up that a long list of New York City doctors and specialists accepted my coverage. This is false. When I needed a specialist none of the neurologists listed by Atlantis accepted my coverage. Many other doctors still listed on the Atlantis main directory had moved from the listed addresses and could not be found. I consider this to be a classic bait and switch tactic on the part of Atlantis. As it turned out, I could only see one neurologist, one day a week only, who would not take appointments. The patients have to show up at 7:30 am and will only be seen if the doctor has time. Although I was told I would have a large selection of Manhattan specialists, the clinic I was sent to by Atlantis customer service was shabby, run down, and in a bad neighborhood. I am now looking for a new health insurance company. I have yet to find even one drug store that will accept my prescription plan.

Review: Awful PreNatal Coverage
I have had a terrible time working with Atlantis for PreNatal and Maternity care. When I first told the woman at my doctor's office that Atlantis was my carrier, she commented on how difficult she found them. Since I was just meeting her, I assumed she was the one with the attitude. How wrong I was! The woman turns out to be a saint, but even a saint would struggle dealing with Atlantis! With their overbearing pre-authorization requirements, slow response, absurd cancellation policies, rude and uninformed customer service reps, inaccessible information, limited network of providers, labs and hospitals, Atlantis is a nightmare for both their members and their providers. After being repeatedly denied claims on basic PreNatal tests including a SONOGRAM, I am leaving Atlantis to both my and my caregivers' relief. You and your baby are worth the slightly higher rates of the other insurance plans.

Review: DO NOT USE!
Their coverage is ridiculous.

I am a healthy young adult - rarely using their services. Everytime I tried to get an appointment - I had to wait over a month for a an appointment for a physical or gyno visit.

Their horrible customer service astounds me. I would call trying to get my ONLY prescription filled and would have to continue calling for over a month, only to be told by the customer service rep, "why don't you just call pharmacist and put us on a conference call, so that you can figure out how WRONG you are."

I'm cancelling my service NOW! I suggest you do the same.

Review: Run away as fast as you can
I was thrilled to find a health insurance plan that appeared to be reasonably priced. The co-pays seemed in line with other carriers and my doctor participates in their program. They also boast about their "no referral required" policy. What I did not realize was that every breath you take has to be pre-authorized through the company. I have a chronic illness which requires daily medication for the rest of my life. If I skip a day of medication my body begins to build up immunity to the medication which could eventually cause my death. I was informed that the pre-authorization would only take 72 hours. Unfortunately, it took Atlantis six weeks to pre-authorize the medication - which left me without medication for three days. While this is a lifetime med, the company requires pre-authorization every 90 days - which I just cannot understand as this is a waste of time and money for the doctors as well as the insurance carrier - not to mention the insured! They also require that you use their mail-order pharmacy out of Ohio but will not authorize the release of the medication until you have completely finished the current month's prescription - once again leaving you without medication for a number of days. Every insurance carrier I have previously had, allowed a 90-day supply of long term medication if shipped from their mail-order pharmacy. Atlantis will only authorize a 30-day supply. I highly recommend that you read all the small print if you proceed with Atlantis but I strongly suggest that you stay as far away as possible. It may seem like a good deal but that couldn't be any farther from the truth.

Review: Stay far away from Atlantis.
If it looks too good to be true then it is.
I signed up for Atlantis about 18 months ago.
Paid my premiums. and then upon taking my daughter to the doctor for an asthma attack was told by the DR. that they had called Atlantis who said that we were not covered. I get home and call Atlantis and they say "oh your covered, the Dr's office most not have spoken to the right person."
2 weeks later I go to a Dr. and the same thing happens.
Calling Atlantis is painful. those answering the phone barely have a command of English, and they are completely unable to give a straight answer to any questions. requests to speak to a supervisor or some higher up results in having to leave a message and never having your call returned.
I ended my insurance coverage and they still billed my after cancelling. now they are taking me to court for the invoices sent after I canceled the policy.
Stay far away from Atlantis.

Review: People I can talk to get what I need done
I have had a great experience with Atlantis. The sales rep was very informative and has been available whenever I need help-with anything. I needed a few tests and different dr visits, and just needed to get authorization and everything was covered. I did have to call in to Atlantis for a claim that was denied, and it was because my dr didn't submit the right paperwork. So, we worked together and I got what I needed! I really like how there were people to talk.

Review: Proceed With Caution!
We signed on with this plan to save money, which wasn't a good reason, but necessary. The sales rep had a great spiel. The reality was far different. The PCP they automatically assigned to us was an Asian woman working out of the screened in front porch of her house! The web site is a joke. I spent 2 hours trying to track down 1 primary care provider that accepts the plan. I'd say 90% of the listings are invalid. The office had moved or changed phone numbers, or stopped accepting the plan. Several listed Doctors had never heard of Atlantis! I think this plan is aimed at the urban family within walking distance of one of their clinics.
